I always thought Cyclops could have been a much more interesting character if Marvel ever cared to write him well, but they decided to use him to promote Wolverine. Let me explain.
There is a character trope where you want the audience to like one character, but you don't actually want to risk altering anything about that character. So what you do is take another character and make them completely unlikeable so that the former character looks better by comparison.
Marvel did this with Cyclops over and over again to prop up Wolverine; unfortunately, they did this so often and for so long that it became really lame. Eventually, Wolverine became overexpose and everyone stopped caring about X-Men, so that problem kind of solved itself, but not before the writers stopped caring about making any of the characters interesting or believable. Last I checked, Marvel had Wolverine babysitting a group of school kids.
I don't think I'm ever going to care about X-Men unless they do a Fables crossover, and even then I'll only put money down if I hear that it's going to feature Wolverine getting his ass handed to him by Bigby Wolfe.
